Per Mark Feinsand, the Mets remain interested in the Rockies Trevor Story with less than four hours to the deadline. The Blue Jays and Giants are also mentioned as interested parties, with room for a mystery team as well. We heard earlier today that the Mets were still in on Kris Bryant and Jose Berrios, and we can add Story to the list of potential acquisitions that could still go down.
Story, 28, is having a down year by his standards, batting .240/.312/429 with a 99 DRC+. His career in Colorado has been quite productive, consistently posting batting lines that are 10-20% better than league average even when accounting for Coors Field. His defense at shortstop remains solid-if-unspectacular, and he could fill in for the injured Franciso Lindor before shifting to third or second for the remainder of the year.
Currently, the Rockies are weighing the offers they’ve received against the value of the qualifying offer. Story will almost assuredly receive and decline the QO, putting the Rockies in line to receive a pick in-between the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the 2022 draft (Competitive Balance Round B). That’s not an incredibly high bar to beat in terms of prospect capital, but it does likely mean the Mets have to offer at least a semi-real piece in order to make the transaction worthwhile for Colorado.
