A late roster change on Wednesday left the Rockies without an available starting pitcher.
The Angels took full advantage, blasted three homers, and established a four-run lead midway through the night in Los Angles. Colorado staged a comeback to tie it in the eighth. Raimel Tapia was the workhorse with four hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
But L.A. pulled away late for an 8-7 win to claim the three-game series.
“A good all-around game for Tapia, he played well, and hopefully he’s got his groove back again,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “To our guys’ credit, we came back. Tap got us closer. … We played hard all game.”
It was bullpen night for Colorado after scheduled starter Chi Chi Gonzalez was placed on the COVID-19 injured list prior to the game. It is unclear when Gonzalez will return. His absence opened the door for Lucas Gilbreath, a Legacy High School graduate, to make his first career MLB start.
Gilbreath lasted a single inning — two hits, one walk, and one earned run — before the Rockies cycled through four additional pitchers to close the game.
The Rockies took a first-inning lead at Angel Stadium. Tapia ripped a leadoff double and Trevor Story capitalized with a two-run homer — his 13th dinger of the season. The Angels quickly cut into their deficit, 2-1, when Jose Iglesias smashed an RBI-double off Gilbreath that scored Shohei Ohtani.
Colorado built on its advantage in the fourth with aggressive base running by catcher Elias Diaz. He walked on six pitches, and when Ryan McMahon hit a flare down the left field line, Diaz hustled to third. Then a wild pitch from Angels’ starter Ryan Heaney brought Diaz home to go up 3-1 on a headfirst slide.
Rockies’ reliever Antonio Santos entered for Gilbreath and pitched 2-2/3 scoreless innings. Tinoco replaced Gilbreath in the fourth when the game spiraled. Ohtani blasted a three-run homer (his 37th of the season). Then Justin Upton added a two-run deep shot.
The Rockies kept Tinoco in the game for the fifth. L.A. catcher Max Stassi roped his first pitch for a solo home run. Suddenly, the Angels led 7-3.
But Colorado made its push in the seventh with a two-run double from Tapia that scored Garrett Hampson and Joshua Fuentes. Tapia made it a one-run game, 7-6, when he scored on a throwing error from Angels second baseman David Fletcher.
Colorado reliever Ben Bowden tossed four combined strikeouts over the sixth and seventh innings to keep the comeback within reach. Then Brendan Rodgers tied the game with an RBI single that scored Fuentes. But it wouldn’t last.
Carlos Esteves pitched the eighth for Colorado. He gave up an RBI single to Angels’ Phil Gosselin that brought home L.A.’s game-winning run.
“Carlos had a little bit of a tough night,” Black said. “It was a good game. We just fell short.”
The Rockies (44-58) aim to build positive momentum on Thursday to begin a four-game series at the San Diego Padres. Colorado is 11-38 on the road this season.
