The 49ers entered training camp relatively healthy, but a few absences gave an early clue as to what the team’s depth chart looks like to start the preseason.
Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw missed part of the session because of a setback in his recovery from a knee injury. Running back Raheem. Mostert is also dealing with a knee ailment, and three players are on the COVID-19 list.
ESPN’s Nick Wagoner after practice laid out how the 49ers filled the gaps created by the ailing or unavailable starters.
Kinlaw was replaced by a combination of Kevin Givens and Kentavius Street. Mostert was spelled mostly by rookie Trey Sermon. Emmanuel Moseley’s absence on the COVID-19 list paved the way for 2019 sixth-round pick Tim Harris Jr. to work with the starting unit. Jaquiski Tartt is on the COVID-19 list as well which pushed veteran Tavon Wilson into the starting group.
There’s still more than a month until the team has to make final cuts, so Wednesday’s action doesn’t work well as a crystal ball for who might eventually make the team. It’s notable for now though as a starting point should availability continue to be limited further into the first couple weeks off camp. We’ll keep a close eye on reports to see if there are any trends that emerge moving forward.
