How to Give ‘Small Travel’ a Try
The lakeside cabin I rented was a short drive up a dirt road from my house in Connecticut.
It’s a fascinating area: The mountaintop lake was created when a river was dammed to service the iron industry. (The town was a big producer of shot and cannonballs for the Revolution.)
Historians say that, at one point, as many as 1,200 people lived up there. Only a handful of cabins remain, and they’re all off the grid. Mine had solar power, but many don’t.
