Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim announced that he’ll donate a week’s worth of his earnings from Cameo to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the latest example of an athlete getting creative with their new NIL rights.

Boeheim shared the plan on Twitter on Saturday, announcing that he’ll donate anything he makes from the service until next Friday. The Syracuse star is currently charging $60 per call according to the Cameo website, where fans can pay athletes to record quick video messages for them or a loved one.

Boeheim’s philanthropic approach probably isn’t a huge surprise. When his father, head coach Jim Boeheim, began using Cameo recently, he did so while donating proceeds to the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation.

The Boeheim family has earned a reputation for their philanthropy in the Central New York area and has a history of supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with the head coach even donning Micky Mouse ears to help deliver news of the gift of a Disney vacation.

The organization raises money to help grant wishes to children struggling with serious diseases, often in the form of destination trips or whimsical remodeling of homes.

Buddy Boeheim’s plan to donate this portion of what he makes from his new NIL rights is just one of the many innovations that have emerged since restrictions on athletes using those rights were lifted on July 1.

The change has led to a wave of athletes getting involved with local businesses across the country, as well as concerns about how that will impact the competitive landscape of college sports.

Boeheim isn’t the only one who has declared his hope to use his new opportunities in order to help out others.

UCLA’s Myles Johnson told the Los Angeles Times that he is focused his use of his NIL rights on how he can benefit his charity foundation BlkDev, which is dedicated to encouraging and inspiring Black students to pursue education and careers in science, technology, education and math, areas in which they are significantly underrepresented.

Arguments from college officials for limiting the financial rights of athletes have often included the idea that college athletes might spend that money irresponsibly.

Boeheim and Johnson are among those showing that some athletes have some very good ideas about where their money should go.
