On a hot summer night at Coors Field, Austin Gomber put on a show for the Colorado Rockies faithful, earning the win against the San Diego Padres to kick off the series and homestand.
Gomber continues his dominance
The story tonight was Austin Gomber. He threw eight scoreless innings, had all four pitches working, and ended the night with 95 pitches - 70 of which were strikes. He allowed just three hits - an infield single to Tommy Pham (erased on a double play), a single through the right side to Wil Myers (stranded at first), and a leadoff double to Victor Caratini in the sixth that was almost a home run (stranded at third). Gomber now has a 23 ⅓ innings scoreless streak at Coors Field dating back to his start against Houston on April 23rd. His home and overall ERAs on the year are 0.95 and 3.54, respectively.
Blackmon, Tapia extend hit streaks
We’ve grown accustomed to hearing this - Charlie Blackmon extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a second inning single. We’re growing more accustomed to hearing this - Raimel Tapia extended his own hitting streak to 11 games with a fifth inning single. Blackmon came around to score after that single and added two walks for good measure, while Tapia stole his sixth base of the year following his hit but was stranded at second base.
Bard survives ninth inning scare
A Ryan McMahon double put the Rockies up three going into the ninth, and it was just enough for Daniel Bard as the Padres offense celebrated Gomber’s departure and came alive. Trent Grisham hit a two-run homer with one out, but Bard was able to rebound against the heart of the Friars’ order, getting Manny Machado to ground out and Fernando Tatís Jr. to pop out to end the game. Bard had previously strung together a streak of 10 scoreless appearances, but fortunately his performance today was still enough to earn the save.
Up Next:
The Rockies will look to continue their momentum tomorrow as they send Chi Chi González (2-4, 5.71 ERA) to pitch against Padres ace Yu Darvish (6-2, 2.28 ERA). If the Rockies are able to defeat Darvish, it will clinch their first series win since sweeping the Rangers in early June. First pitch is at 6:40 pm MDT.
