VILLANOVA, Pa.—The numbers are in from another impressive semester in the classroom for Villanova student-athletes, who have now maintained a grade point average above a 3.0 for 36 consecutive semesters dating back 18 full academic years. The GPA for more than 550 student-athletes during the Spring 2021 semester was 3.461, making this 13 straight semesters that student-athletes have had a GPA of 3.2 or higher. The elite academic performance of Wildcats student-athletes continues to put Villanova in the upper echelon of universities nationwide for its combination of athletic success and academic achievement.

Success in the classroom has been across-the-board for Villanova Athletics, with every one of the 24 varsity sports programs posting a team GPA over a 3.0 for the Spring 2021 semester with women's cross country leading the way with a mark of 3.739. The other programs in the top five of team GPAs for the spring were women's swimming & diving (3.690), women's track & field (3.689); rowing (3.663); and softball (3.661).

On an individual level there were 50 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring semester. Rowing led all teams with nine members of its roster who had a 4.0 GPA, while women's track & field had five student-athletes with a 4.0 and football, field hockey and men's soccer each had four. There were 17 different teams to have at least one student-athlete with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. In all, more than 86 percent of student-athletes (487 of 567) had a GPA of 3.0 or higher in Spring 2021, while 438 student-athletes (77%) were named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for having a semester GPA above a 3.2.

The academic achievement of the senior class was also of note, as 45 percent of the student-athletes in the Class of 2021 graduated with honors for having a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. That includes 10 seniors who graduated magna cum laude with a GPA of 3.75+ and five students who graduated summa cum laude with a GPA of at least 3.9.

The student-athletes from the Wildcats 24 varsity sports combined their elite academic performance with success in athletic competition during a unique spring semester that saw more than 300 athletic events and all 24 teams in action simultaneously for the first time in Villanova Athletics history. During the spring semester the Wildcats crowned BIG EAST champions in women's swimming & diving, softball, women's outdoor track & field and men's basketball. The men's and women's basketball teams, the men's cross country squad and the softball team all advanced to national postseason competition, while individuals from women's cross country and men's and women's track & field all competed at their respective NCAA Championships.

The release of academic data from the Spring 2021 semester is the latest recognition for Villanova student-athletes for their success in their academic pursuits. The most recent NCAA data to be released was the Graduation Success Rate update in November 2020 in which Villanova Athletics reported its highest-ever mark of 97 percent. Each of the Wildcats sports programs exceeded the overall national average of 90 percent, while Villanova has also had at least 14 teams earn NCAA public recognition awards for their Academic Progress Rate success in each of the past four years.
