Optimistic Yankees spin more positivity amid continued doldrums - NJ.com

The Yankees know that they’ve underachieving and they’re still convinced that they’re a lot better than average, even though that’s what their 33-31 record indicates.

As the losses continue to pile up — Saturday’s 8-7, 10-inning road setback to the Phillies was their 12th in 17 games since May 25 — upbeat feelings accompanied the disappointment of being walked off twice in a row.

The Yankees have been preaching for more than two months that their sleeping-giant offense again will be a consistent force, and they’re believing it’s finally happening.

Hitting .323 with 29 runs over the last four games has fueled the unwavering optimism leaping to higher levels. On Saturday, the Yankees forced extras after falling behind 7-2 through five innings and trailing by three runs until DJ LeMahieu hit a two-on, game-tying homer in the ninth off Phillies closer Hector Neris.

“We’re not into moral victories right now certainly, but the compete of the guys right now is excellent,” manager Aaron Boone said. “The offense is certainly waking up. We’re seeing better and better at-bats. We had a lot of chances (Saturday) to do even more offensively. It’s definitely good to see DJ obviously put a really good swing on one in that spot to tie the game, but we’ve got to continue.”

Yes, the Yankees have to continue piling up runs. But despite LeMahieu’s homer, they need to do a lot better in clutch situations. While scoring eight, nine, five and seven runs in the first four games of their three-city roadtrip, the Yankees were just 2-for-15, 1-for-8, 2-for-9 and 2-for-12 hitting with runners in scoring position average. Totaled up, that’s 7-for-44, which computes to .159. But averaging 7.25 runs over a small four-game stretch still is big improvement for a club that has scored zero, one or two runs in 23 of their first 64 games, three or fewer 33 times.

“I like the way we competed the last two games,” LeMahieu said. “We didn’t get the result. We didn’t get the win. But I really like how we’re playing. I know those results are going to come.”
