NEW HAVEN — Ready, set, give.
The 11th annual Great Give, a 36-hour community fundraising event for local nonprofits serving Greater New Haven, began this morning, asking communities to step up with their support.
Started by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the online event supports hundreds of nonprofits providing important services for area residents. This year, amid the coronavirus pandemic, that support is critical for many.
“We opened up early giving for The Great Give 2020 to help nonprofits raise immediate and much needed funds,” said Jackie Downing, director of grantmaking and nonprofit effectiveness at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, in an email. “We are moved to see such a strong response from early donors, both in dollar amounts and number of gifts. We hope it is a trend that will continue over the official 36 hours starting at 8 a.m. on May 5”
The funds raised will be matched by the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the Valley Community Foundation and other sponsors.
“The impact of COVID-19 on many nonprofits and the people they serve is unprecedented,” the foundation said on its website. “Social distancing guidelines and safety mandates have resulted in increased demand for services for some and lost revenues from fundraising event cancellations and closures for others. Though COVID-19 has changed the way we presently interact, there is a way we can come together online during The Great Give.”
The Great Give began at 8 a.m. today and will continue until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Last year, the event broke its fundraising record by collecting more than $1.8 million.
“Whatever inspires you, you can find a participating nonprofit working in that space,” the foundation said. “Your donations are as valuable as ever.”
Organizations supporting immigrants, arts and culture, social justice, food poverty, libraries, youth development and others all are participating in the Great Give.
The foundation’s 20-town service area includes Ansonia, Bethany, Branford, Cheshire, Derby, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, Milford, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton, Wallingford, West Haven and Woodbridge.
