ROANOKE, Va. – Officials gave an update on flooding that swept across the city of Roanoke.
Deputy Chief Billy Altman from Roanoke Fire-Ems says it was a pretty uneventful night in the city.
Crews completed the evacuation of 116 people from the Ramada Inn on Franklin Road.
They responded to several calls of water in basements, including one hazmat situation where gasoline got into the water, which Altman says was quickly taken care of.
The Spring Valley Dam, which caused people in 13 homes to be evacuated Thursday morning, is stable and an engineer who examined the dam says no problems are expected.
“Everything was flowing well through it. It was draining well there’s really no danger of it failing now. They’re really happy with it,” said Altman.
City leaders took a moment during the press conference to remind drivers to obey the barricades and to not drive around those.
Officials say the day crew will make decisions about cleanup, but once the water goes down, they say crews will be out in full force.
