San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Trey Sermon has the attention of head coach Kyle Shanahan following his second-career game and first NFL touchdown in a 30-28 loss last week to the Green Bay Packers.

“Trey, it took him a while to get up, but he has with these injuries. And I thought he ran the ball a lot better versus Green Bay than he did in the preseason,” Shanahan said, according to NBC Sports. “He had a better week this week than he did last week. And I expect him to keep getting better with the opportunities being given. …Just watching Trey this week, what he’s done good or bad in games. You always want to see how they apply it to the next week. The things that I thought he has struggled with that weve tried to get him to focus on, you see him go in to practice and do it.”

A third-round pick out of Ohio State in the 2021 NFL Draft, Sermon spent the first three years of his college career at Oklahoma. But Sermon transferred to play for the Buckeyes in 2020, where he ran for 870 yards and four touchdowns in eight games played. That led to the 49ers taking Sermon this past spring.

Sermon did not play in the 49ers’ Week 1 win over the Detroit Lions but made his debut against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. San Francisco won that game but Sermon got just one carry in the game, as he was injured on the carry. But Sermon bounced back in Week 3 with his first-career touchdown, as well as 31 rushing yards on 10 carries.

While those numbers are not as high as Sermon might want them, he is still going through the transition to the professional level. Sermon described that transition in early August before the season started.

“It’s sort of, it’s really a big difference because I mean I was never really in the (I-formation). My first time doing it was when I got to Ohio State,” Sermon said. “So just coming here, and just being able to adapt is definitely something that I’ve worked on. I mean, I really don’t have a choice. I mean it’s just what we do so, I just have to try to focus on it. I mean even after practice just working on my steps and everything and just get more comfortable with it.”
