Halloween 2021 kicks off this year with what can best be described as a bit of normalcy as kids head out to trick or treat in their neighborhoods. While COVID-19 is always a concern, relaxed regulations allow kids to partake in the traditional ritual. The Springfield Police Department has helped kick off the season with what they call “Truck or Treat events.”

Last weekend, the C3 Unit in Mason Square held a Harvest Fest and Truck to Treat event that saw more than 200 bags of candy distributed to neighborhood kids.

Sunday, The Forest Park C3 Unit will be doing the same. Area children can come to the Elks Lodge at 440 Tiffany Street between 12 and 2 p.m.

“We know families are looking forward to celebrating Halloween and trick-or-treating with some sense of normalcy this year,” Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood said. “We encourage everyone to review and discuss with their children and teenagers tips to help keep them safe.”

Clapprood and city Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris recommend common-sense safety measures:

· Wear a medical mask or face covering, but do not depend on a costume mask. It does not provide the protections a PPE mask can.

· Avoid confined spaces, large gatherings and be sure to maintain social distancing.

· If possible, hand out Halloween treats outdoors and not by your front door. This will help reduce gatherings in confined spaces such as doorways, porches, front steps, etc.

· If you are sick or know someone who is sick with COVID-19, stay home and isolate away from others.

When it comes to costume safety experts recommend:

· All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant.

· Any props should be soft to avoid injuries, and no part of a costume should impair vision or movement.

· Wear sturdy shoes and temperature appropriate clothing under the costume.

· If trick-or-treaters are allowed outside after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and or bags. Give them a flashlight or glow sticks to carry to ensure they are visible to drivers.

· When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is non-toxic and always test on a small are of the child’s skin first.

· Remove all makeup before the child goes to bed to prevent eye and skin irritation.
