Cleveland extends registration for curbside recycling until Nov. 5 to accommodate continued demand - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Residents of Cleveland have been given two more weeks to opt-in to the voluntary recycling program the city hopes to start by the end of the year.

Initially, the cut-off for registration was Oct. 22, but when a surge in interest did not taper as expected, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson extended the deadline to Nov. 5, said Chief of Sustainability Jason Wood.

As of mid-afternoon on Wednesday about 21,500 residents had registered, Wood said. “I think we’re going to end up with a good amount of participation and enrollment.”

For those who don’t sign up in time, they will have a chance to do so at a later date.

The city still must select a vendor for the recycling program. The window for submitting bids has closed and Wood said he expects a contract to be reached in time to begin the recycling program by mid-December.

Cleveland has not had curbside recycling collection since spring of 2020 when the contract with the city’s recycling vendor expired and a suitable replacement could not be found.

Making it difficult to restart the program was the high degree of contamination in the city’s recycling stream, making it expensive and inefficient to operate.

The new proposed recycling program hopes to mitigate those concerns by having residents opt-in to the program with the understanding that they will be expected to follow the rules, which includes only putting acceptable items in the recycling bins.

There is no additional cost to residents to participate in the curbside recycling program, Wood said.

The items that will be acceptable for collection as part of the city’s curbside program will be cans, cartons, glass, paper and boxes, plastic bottles and jugs, and possible glass depending on the nature of the vendor contract.

Examples of items that are not to placed in the blue recycling bins are plastic bags, Styrofoam containers, lids, paint, hoses and rope.

Also, all food containers that can be recycled should be rinsed or cleaned.
