A day after getting yet another dominant performance from Jacob deGrom, the New York Mets turned to Marcus Stroman to try and salvage a split of their four-game series against the San Diego Padres. As he’s done for virtually the entire season, Stroman didn’t disappoint.

He ended up allowing just one run on four hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. This was the sixth straight start in which he lasted at least six frames, with five of those six (including the last four in a row) being quality starts. According to MMO’s Mathew Brownstein, this streak ties Stroman’s longest of his MLB career, which happened in 2015.

The biggest jam Stroman had to find his way out of happened in the fourth inning, which started promising by inducing a groundout against Fernando Tatis Jr. It was followed by a single by Eric Hosmer, a walk to Wil Myers, and a single by Ha-Seong Kim to load the bases with just one out. That’s when Brandon Drury saved the day with a very pretty double play:

Stroman didn’t have his best command on Sunday. The four walks he allowed are a single-game high for this season, and the same number of free passes he allowed in his last five starts leading into this one. He made it work, though, as manager Luis Rojas mentioned that his righty setting the tone by mixing his repertoire and finding a way to get the job done was key for New York to snag a victory.

The sign of a good pitcher is being able to get the job done in a big spot when they don’t have their best stuff on that particular day. Stroman once again proved he could get it done, and his last four starts have been excellent:

Between deGrom, Stroman, and Taijuan Walker, the Mets have a formidable triple threat at the top of their rotation. All three of them own an ERA below 2.50, which ranks among the top-15 in baseball when looking at qualified starting pitchers.

It also didn’t hurt that Stroman helped his own cause with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning:

This was an important insurance run because it gave New York a 4-1 lead at the moment before James McCann stayed hot and hit a two-run homer the following inning. Stroman’s celebration on second base also can’t be overlooked because we’ve been given the type of GIF we’ll likely use for years to come.

That’s the kind of excitement and energy the Mets will hopefully bring with them to Baltimore for a short two-game set against the Orioles before buckling up for a homestand that includes welcoming the Padres and Chicago Cubs to town starting this Friday.
