Gov. to Give Coronavirus Update as Vt. Awaits Test Results From Possible Outbreak - NECN

Gov. Phil Scott will give a coronavirus update Friday as Vermont awaits results of hundreds of tests to determine the size of a potential outbreak.

As of Thursday, 59 people showed positive results through antigen testing performed at a clinic in Manchester.

Since the newer antigen tests provide fast but less reliable results, Vermont health officials are treating these as “presumptive positives," until they can be confirmed with more accurate PCR tests.

Approximately 10 percent of those 59 tests have come back so far, with about two-thirds showing negative results via PCR tests.

Testing clinics were run Wednesday in Manchester and Londonderry.

All the potentially positive cases are being treated as though they are confirmed positives, according to the Health Department. People are being told to stay home and contact tracers are seeking the sources of the possible infections.

Epidemiologists are trying to determine what the results mean, according to Levine, noting that, “One explanation may be that many of the people who were tested at Manchester Medical did not have symptoms.”

“CDC and the Association of Public Health Laboratory guidelines do not recommend antigen testing for people without symptoms,” Levine said.

As of Thursday, the state reported nine new cases of coronavirus, bringing the state total to 1,325. The death toll has remained at 56 for weeks.
