GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -

The Greenville Police Department and community partners have paired up to give a local community center a boost.

Officers traded their uniforms for a paintbrush as they joined volunteers to help give “Operation Sunshine” a makeover.

The event took place Saturday at the facility that focuses on vulnerable young ladies from ages 5-13 through education and mentoring in a structured after-school and summer program.

They also serve the community as a food bank.

The makeover included painting, floor replacement, landscaping, interior design and more.

“We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary for Operation Sunshine, and Captain Thomas wanted to do something small, but as you can see, it has become a mass project of a makeover. These are all the things that we’ve been praying for, and we’re blessed by the community serving us,” says Executive Director Barbara Dabis.

“We were looking for something to bring people together, especially with everything going on. So, this was a way to reach out to the community, gather some of our partners, and bring them in and have them work together to do something great for a center that serves young ladies in the community,” Captain Kolenya Thomas adds.

The big reveal took place at 3 p.m.
