RIVERTON, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -
As so much of the country is currently in upheaval, this community showed us there are peaceful ways to accomplish your goals and let your voices be heard. The peace march happened on Saturday July 25, 2020 at 8:30 in the morning. A group of people started marching across from the Center of Hope, down Main St. to Riverton City Park.
Ron Howard, organizer of the march said the reason for starting it was that a fatal shooting occurred at the Center of Hope rehabilitation facility in 2015.
"It was a really hard thing for the whole community to handle. There was a lot of anger, and one thing that I realized was that, with all that anger and frustration and confusion and pain, the community didn't know what to do with it," emphasized Howard.
Howard said that a discussion ensued on social media, and someone suggested the peace march. He thought it was a good idea, but it didn’t seem like there was anyone to lead it. Although he didn’t want to take credit for it, Howard did step up to the plate when he realized a peaceful outlet was needed.
“Nobody was stepping up to say I’ll do it, so I thought for the sake of my own children, and as a preschool teacher, for the sake of my students and all the kids in this community I stood up and said, OK, well I’ll get the ball rolling.”
A veteran himself, he realized the value and meaning of patriotism. “The definition of patriotism is to help your country, and what better way to do that than to help each other out. If you see somebody’s who is hungry, get them some food. If you see somebody’s who’s cold, get them a coat, you know, simple things like that,” noted Howard.
After everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance at city park after the march, Howard said, "So one of the reasons we wanted to say the pledge today was regardless or race, regardless or color or background or religion or whatever, It's the flag, that one flag, that brings us all together as Americans."
The Color Guard was there to present the flags, and the Riverton City Police were present to ensure safety for all.
Howard said, "I'm very grateful to the Riverton City Police Department for their escorts and their patience as while we do this."
Howard said he plans to continue the march as long as there are lives lost in order to honor them, and even if there is no reason to protest, they will continue to march in celebration of peace.”
