Acadiana's continued unemployment claims reach 36,000, federal $600 expansion ending soon - Daily Advertiser

The Acadiana region reported more than 36,000 continued unemployment claims and more than 3,100 new claims just weeks before the extra $600 federal unemployment benefits are set to expire.

Regional Labor Market 4, which is the Acadiana region including Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion Parishes, had the third-most continued claims as of July 11 behind Baton Rouge (more than 65,000) and New Orleans (about 106,000), data from the Louisiana Workforce Commission shows.

Continued claims are claims that have been recertified for another week since the initial claim. Acadiana's 36,000 continued claims the week of July 11 is the most the region has had since May 23, before the state moved into Phase 2.

Acadiana's continued claims have held relatively steady since the state moved into Phase 2 of reopening, but claims are still nearly 2,300% higher than the number of continued claims before Gov. John Bel Edwards' stay-at-home order, issued March 22. The week leading up to the order had a little over 1,500 continued claims across Acadiana.

For the week ending June 13, the first full week after moving to Phase 2, Acadiana had a little more than 34,000 claims. Since that week, continued claims have increased by 2,160 — the largest increase of any region in the state.

Only the New Orleans region has seen a net decrease in continued claims since the start of Phase 2, down about 1,100.

Lafayette Parish had the most continued claims for the week ending July 11 with 14,500. Lafayette was sixth in the state for continued claims.

St. Landry Parish was second in Acadiana with 4,600.

Iberia Parish had more than 4,500 continued claims. St. Mary Parish had more than 3,000. Acadia Parish had nearly 2,900 claims.

St. Martin Parish had more than 2,800 continued claims. Vermilion Parish had more than 2,600 claims. Evangeline Parish had the fewest continued claims in the region with just over 1,300.

Acadiana's 3,100 new claims were also third in the state, again behind Baton Rouge (4,900) and New Orleans (5,800). New claims have been up and down for the last several weeks as the state's reopening plan stalled in Phase 2 due to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Lafayette Parish had the most new claims for the region, adding nearly 1,200 as of July 11. Iberia Parish added 410 claims, and St. Landry Parish added 384. No other Acadiana parish added more than 300 new claims.

Lafayette Parish added the fifth-most new claims of any parish in the state, behind Caddo Parish (just over 1,200), Jefferson Parish (2,000), Orleans Parish (2,200), and East Baton Rouge Parish (2,300).

The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program ends the week of July 25, meaning those collecting unemployment will no longer receive the extra $600 per week from the federal government.

Once that program ends, Louisiana workers will only be eligible for state benefits, which is capped at $247 per week for 26 weeks.
