The recovery from the COVID-19 economic shutdowns continued in Texas last month, Labor Department data shows.

The unemployment rate in Texas fell to 8.6 percent in June from 13 percent in May as businesses reopened. Texas employers added 225,200 jobs in June.

It’s the second month in a gradual recovery since the coronavirus pandemic put millions of people out of work across the state. Texas, however, has lost a net 865,000 jobs since the beginning of the year.

“June’s labor market numbers demonstrate we are moving in the right direction,” Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Bryan Daniel said in a statement.
