GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — It was a graduation from a distance.
A group of 8th graders were surprised by their teachers after weeks of online learning. Their graduation ceremony was canceled due to the coronavirus but that didn’t stop their teachers from celebrating their hard work.
Wednesday would have been the last day for the 8th graders at Saints Francis and Clare Assisi School. Since they couldn’t come to school, their teachers decided to bring the celebration to them.
Teachers, staff and even the school mascot loaded up a bus with goodie bags, diplomas and a special t-shirt that reads “Class of 2020 Making History While Under Quarantine!” to hand out to the 8th grade class.
“Today would have been their last day of school and we would have graduated tomorrow night,” said Principal Betty Popp.
The students had no idea what was happening when they saw their school bus pull in front of their home. The teachers called parents a few stops ahead to let them know they were on their way.
“So what did you think when your parents woke you up at like 8:30 this morning,” asked News 8 reporter Sierra Hignite.
“I don’t know. They were just like, ‘get ready.’ And I was like, ‘okay.’ I mean I expected something was going to happen but I didn’t think it was going to be this big,” said 8th grade student Lauren Volk.
The school felt it was important to give the students some closure after an unprecedented end to their school year.
“They didn’t realize that on that last day when we sent them home they were staying home,” said Popp.
“We spent three years with them and it is kind of like our school year was ended abruptly and we miss them. This is a big deal for them. They are going off to high school. We haven’t seen them in a while,” said teacher and parent Sarah Pironello.
They also wanted to make up for some of the fun, end-of-year events that the students missed out on.
“They are missing like field day or miss their Washington, D.C. trip. And so this is at least something little. I mean it is small and it comes from the heart and we mean everything that we are doing,” said Pironello.
The bus stopped at the home of nearly every 8th grade student and each time the line of cheering teachers holding signs was met with a grinning and thankful student.
“I think this just gives us an opportunity to say ‘hey, you did a great job this year and here you go and good luck and we will miss you and do great things,'” said Pironello.
While to these teachers the gesture seemed small, to the families it meant more than they’ll ever know.
“I miss seeing my friends and even just even, like, talking to my teachers on a daily basis,” said Volk.
“We are a small community and they mean a lot to us and we want to wish them well,” said Popp.
The teachers were able to see 36 of the 37 students of the 8th grade graduating class.
