High school seniors help

Area high school seniors provided $54,500 to the grand total, thanks to funding from the PATH Foundation.

This year’s program upped the ante substantially, increasing the value of student votes from $25 per selection to $100 per selection. The philanthropic-focused program encourages high school seniors to think about giving back to their communities, coinciding with Give Local Piedmont.

“Our hope with the program is for graduating seniors to think about giving back to the community, even though they are looking towards graduation and beyond,” PATH President/CEO Christy Connolly said. “This year is very different, of course. With so many traditions changed, it was important to us to continue this one.”

This year, 545 high school seniors across Fauquier, Rappahannock and Culpeper counties – from public and private schools – participated, a substantial drop from previous years. Though fewer seniors participated, the 400-percent increase in donation per selection makes this year’s high school giving program the largest amount to date.

= “We knew school closings would make this an especially challenging year for student participation, but we’re committed to the program and grateful we’ve been able to increase the value of their votes,” Ms. Connolly said. “Nonprofits always need community support, but even more so during these trying times.”

The leaders among high school seniors:

Fauquier SPCA, 63 votes for $6,300.

Fauquier Free Clinic, 29 votes for $2,900.

Special Olympics Virginia Area 27, 22 votes for $2,200.

Fauquier FISH, 19 votes for $1,900.

A Little Heart, 18 votes for $1,800.
