In just 24 hours, the community raised more than $400,000 for more than 60 local organizations as part of the Give Local Midland event.

In years past, Give Local Midland has raised around an average of $250,000, making this year record-breaking, said Sharon Mortensen, president and CEO of the Midland Area Community Foundation.

"Thank you to our amazing community -- we were just overwhelmed with the support that poured out from community members," she said. "They supported these nonprofits in such an incredible way."

She said they weren't sure what to expect given the current climate of the coronavirus pandemic, however, she said it seemed to garner more support from the community. She said it was a wonderfully exciting day, especially for the organizations who participated.

The total raised, $404,229 was donated by 1,190 different donors over the course of the day yesterday, May 5. Give Local Midland was facilitated by the Midland Area Community Foundation, which matched $79,000.

In addition, several organizations received bonus prize awards. For example, SOS Animal Rescue received $300 for raising the most money between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. and Adoption Option, Inc. was awarded $300 for garnering the most unique donors between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Coming in at $26,275, Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Network raised the most of all the organizations, followed by Midland’s Open Door, Independent Community Living, the Humane Society of Midland County and Camp Neyati – Midland Camping Council.

In terms of the number of donors, the Humane Society came out on top with 152 individual donations, followed by EFPN with 143, Midland’s Open door with 131 and Chippewa Nature Center and Shelterhouse, which both had 80 individual donations.

Give Local Midland is an annual giving event that takes place on the first Tuesday in May, hosted by MACF. This year, the event coincided with National Giving Tuesday, which is a global movement and organization that inspires people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity. Giving Tuesday traditionally takes place in December; however, the Giving Tuesday organization has established an additional giving day due to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

In years past, GLM was used to raise funding for endowments and used for long-term investment. However, this year, the funds raised by organizations will be available for immediate use, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

To thank the community, Mortensen published the following video on the MACF's Facebook page on Wednesday:
