HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Thursday is the final day of the extended Give Hastings Day, and through the tough times, local nonprofits are counting on the donations. With finances being tight, the Hastings Community Foundation wasn't sure they would reach donation numbers they have seen in the past.
The Hastings community has been rallying behind their local nonprofits and are making big donations on Give Hastings Day to show support. (KSNB)
Months ago the foundation decided to move forward with Give Hastings Day by adding the extra days to help their non-profits. They originally believed $300,000 to be a lofty goal, but they reached that number by early afternoon.
“The gifts that we have seen coming in so far have absolutely blown us away,” Hastings Community Foundation Executive Director Dan Peters said. “The generosity of Hastings and Adams County is just amazing.”
The Salvation Army has been stretching some of their services due to high demand. They spend about $500 a day to feed hundreds of people out of their food truck. They park in H street on Monday through Friday from 4-5 and pass out free meals to about 200 people.
In past years, they would be saving Give Hastings Day money to feed kids during the summer.
“But this year we've taken the money and designated it for COVID relief,” Hastings Salvation Army Major Dale Brandenburg said. “So it's very important that it comes in this year. Not only will we be using money to help buy food to run on our food truck, but also we'll have the money to help people that are struggling with utility bills, rent, and our food pantry.”
That will be in addition to their normal services.
Animals are also being impacted by the pandemic at Start Over Rover. Even though their doors have been shut, animals in need are still coming in. Donations have been down in recent weeks and they need the funds to help pay for all of their animal supplies.
“We've never seen a time like this but I have no doubt that the community has always been so supportive of our organization,” Co-Founder Anne Halbert said. “We will continue to get out there, look for grants, be out in the public as soon as we can.”
Halbert also said that despite being closed, adoptions are still holding steady. They will continue to take care of animals as they have for the last nine years.
Donations to any of the nonprofits will be accepted until 11:59 pm on Thursday. Donate at givehastings.org
