SYCAMORE – Micki Chulick has had her calendar marked and has been waiting anxiously for May 7 all year, the date of Give DeKalb County.
“It’s one of my favorite days of the year,” said Chulick, the president of the DeKalb County Community Foundation board. “Helping our nonprofit organizations and agencies is more important and vital now than ever because of the coronavirus.”
Give DeKalb County is a 24-hour day of giving that helps nonprofit organizations and funds that serve the county. The day of giving is coordinated by the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership (DCNP), a program of the DeKalb County Community Foundation (DCCF).
“Nationwide, 75 to 80% of nonprofit organizations had to cancel fundraising events due to the coronavirus,” said Ben Bingle, director of the DCNP. “Give DeKalb County is carrying on. It’s a way for nonprofits to raise valuable, unrestricted funds at a time they need it the most.”
Give DeKalb County benefits 111 nonprofit organizations and funds that are participating in the annual giving day.
The past six giving days in the six years combined have raised more than $2.5 million for participating nonprofit organizations. Last year, 1,901 individual donors made 4,352 donations totaling $751,050. Donations were received from 43 states and four countries.
Every donation made during Give DeKalb County leverages a portion of matching funds from the bonus pool. More than 30 community partners have donated to the bonus pool so far, including The Suter Company, which donated $50,000 and DCCF, which donated $25,000.
Collectively reaching two milestones will unlock additional funds to the bonus pool: if $200,000 or more is raised by 10 a.m. on May 7, $10,000 will be added and if at least 1,500 individual donors participate in Give DeKalb County then $15,000 will be added.
“Every dollar that is donated counts, and with the bonus pool, every dollar goes a little bit further,” Bingle said. “We’re so fortunate to have such a diverse nonprofit community in DeKalb County. They touch our lives in so many different ways. Each has a profile on the Give DeKalb County website, so donors can learn about their organization, mission, programs and services offered.”
How to Donate
Walk-in donations have been canceled due to COVID-19, but donations by mail postmarked by May 7 will be allowed.
Donors giving by check can print a donation form from the website, complete the form indicating the organizations and donation amounts, then write a single check for the total amount payable to “DCCF.” Checks can be mailed to DeKalb County Community Foundation, 475 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL 60178.
Donors can also give through the website www.GiveDeKalbCounty.org from midnight to midnight May 7. Donations can be made online by credit card, debit card, ACH transfer or Mobile Wallet.
Minimum donation online is $5, but mail-in donations can be any amount.
“Any contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference,” DCCF director Dan Templin said. “The magic of Give DeKalb County is that it highlights the nonprofit sector as a whole, raising thousands of dollars for nonprofits in the community. It allows donors to support the organizations they care the most about. The money raised will help nonprofits continue to do what they do, which is make an impactful difference in DeKalb County.”
