Jean Marotta has been a regular at the Hungry Ghost coffee shop in Prospect Heights for three years. And she hasn’t given up her daily habit just because her favorite table is off-limits due to the coronavirus.
Now, the Flatbush public-school teacher picks up her cappuccino and croissant from a masked barista behind the counter, parks her blue beach chair on the sidewalk in front of the cafe and gets to work with her second-grade students.
“People think I’m crazy,” she told The Post, as cars whizzed down Flatbush Avenue. “But I don’t care.
In fact, maintaining her caffeine routine is keeping Marotta, 41, sane in the middle of pandemic madness: “I’m doing what I have to do to boost my spirits.”
In late March, when teaching became an online operation, “I was home for two weeks, sitting on my couch all day, working from my computer — and actually putting a dent in the cushion,” said the single Brooklynite. “I felt sad. I missed my community at Hungry Ghost, and wondered how the people who work there are doing. I needed to turn things around.”
So the regular returned to her old haunt with seat, laptop and tablet in hand. “I use the Hungry Ghost Wifi and teach my class from out here,” she said. “The kids enjoy it. They know that I love coffee and that this makes me happy.”
At noon, she packs up and takes a walk around Prospect Park before heading home in time to resume teaching at 12:50.

“People will sometimes stop and chat,” she said of her morning perch. “There’s a police precinct around the corner and the cops love me. A gentleman saw me and said, ‘I understand why you’re doing what you do. Coming here in the morning, having a coffee, that used to be the happiest 15 minutes of my day. I’ve lost that.’
“There is a lot of giving in right now,” Marotta continued. “This is one thing I’m not giving in on.”
