Update: Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell announced his retirement Tuesday, citing health issues. His Bethel, N.Y., performance on Saturday will be his last concert.

Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell looked pretty smashed at a recent concert in Upstate New York.

The New York Post reports a TikTok video has gone viral showing Harwell slurring his words, threatening a fan, and even appearing to give a Nazi salute during a performance at The Big Sip beer festival in Bethel, N.Y., on Saturday. Clips shared by user @doesthisfeelgood show a number of technical issues, including feedback and blown-out speakers as Harwell appeared to grow increasingly frustrated on stage.

“F--- you bitches,” Harwell said while raising two middle fingers.

“I’ll f---ing kill your whole family, I swear to God,” he later told one audience member.

Harwell, the 54-year-old voice of hits like “All Star,” “Walking on the Sun” and the “Shrek” soundtrack cover of the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer,” was also seen dropping a drink and swaying on stage. The Los Angeles Times reports he also told the crowd he would never leave the house if he were better at masturbating.

TikTok user @doesthisfeelgood, who only identified herself as Haley, said she recorded the video clips while attending “the most chaotic show I’ve ever seen in my life.” Smash Mouth performed from 3:45-5 p.m. as part of Bethel’s two-day beer and wine festival, previously known as Wine Festival and Craft: Beer, Spirits and Food Festival.

“Ok there’s a lot goin on here and i know i did a bit recently about wanting to be the new smashmouth singer but i don’t,” rock band Eve 6 wrote on Twitter, in response to the video. “I just want this guy to get clean cuz this is sad pull him off the road 90 meetings in 90 days or ur gonna have another dead rockstar on ur hands.”

Smash Mouth, which performed at the Taste of Syracuse in 2018 and Oswego Harborfest in 2019, has struggled with a number of issues in recent years. The band was criticized last year for performing at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota despite widespread Covid-19 concerns. The Post reports Harwell was also briefly replaced by an unidentified friend of the band during a hiatus last month due to health concerns, including cardiomyopathy and heart failure. A rep told TMZ last week that he was taking medication to manage his condition and could resume performing.

Representatives for the group did not respond to requests for comment from the Post or the L.A. Times.
