Starter Luis García couldn’t hold the Red Sox, who didn’t want to waste a single minute and ambushed García and Jake Odorizzi in the first two innings of the game. Two grand slams, one from JD Martínez and the other by Rafael Devers were enough for Boston to get a 9-5 victory to even things up in the American League Championship Series 1-1.
For the second consecutive start, García was totally crushed by the opposition. This time he only lasted an inning on the mound and things went badly since the beginning of the contest. Kyle Schwarber got a leadoff double, García retired Kiké Hernández, then he walked Devers, struck out Xander Bogaerts, walked Alex Verdugo, and former Astro Martínez disappeared a 93.6-mph four-seamer over the right-field fence.
García struck out Hunter Renfroe to end the inning, but he was replaced by Odorizzi after beginning the second frame by walking Kevin Plawecki and suffering right knee discomfort. Immediately, Odo allowed to Devers the second grand slam of the game for the Red Sox. In an inning and a half, the Astros were down 8-0 on the score.

The scenario was not good at all for Houston. They were already down by eight runs and needed to get through the rest of the game with their bullpen. But, fortunately for the ‘Stros thinking about the upcoming games, Odorizzi managed it to throw four innings of seven hits, four earned runs, and two home runs. Not even a bit good, but he dodged a disaster for Houston.
In the fourth, the Red Sox added one more run via another Kiké Hernández’s home run, his fifth dinger of the postseason. But the Astros were ready to have a nice three-run rally in the bottom of the inning against starter Nathan Eovaldi. With an RBI double by Kyle Tucker and a two-run single by Yulieski Gurriel, Houston was closing the gap.
But Adam Ottavino and Garrett Whitlock stopped the local offense until completing eight innings. For the ninth, the Red Sox brought in lefty Darwinzon Hernández and after getting the first out, he allowed homers to Yuli Gurriel —who produced three of the Astros’ five runs— and Jason Castro. Ryan Brasier got the final out of the night.
Now, the series is moving to Fenway Park for the next three games. José Urquidy will get the ball to start Game 3, while the Red Sox’s starter is not confirmed yet. See you on Monday at 7:08 pm CT, folks!
