JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- A proposal on the Nov. 2 election ballot asks Waterloo Township voters to support millage funding for continued police services.

The proposal would allow the township to impose an increase of up to 0.7 mills -- or $0.70 per $1,000 of taxable value -- to provide funds for police protection and public safety services. The township contracts with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for these services.

The millage would be levied between 2021-25, and could raise about $92,553 in the first year, township officials said.

“We’ve contracted with the sheriff’s department for a year using funds that we had available in our fund balance,” said Waterloo Township Supervisor Doug Lance. “We don’t have the resources to do that endlessly, and were this (millage) to pass, it would allow us to continue providing that service.”

Were the millage to fail, Lance believes the township could support the contract using general funds for another year, before going back to the “previous arraignment,” in which township residents would have to call 911 in the case of an emergency, and wait for whatever agencies could response.

Having deputies within the township substantially reduces response times for emergency calls, Lance said.

Currently, the contract between Waterloo Township and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office allows for 40 hours per week of police presence in the township, Lance said. The schedule of the deputies varies to account for an increase of activity in the summer months due to a large number of visitors to the township.

In November 2016, township residents voted down a 10-year, 1.5-mill tax proposal that would have fully funded the township’s own police department.

The township’s board opted to suspend its police services the following February.
