CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and police officials are scheduled to give an update on the fatal shooting of undercover Cleveland police officer James Skernivitz and a 50-year-old police informant.

Jackson will be joined by Public Safety Director Karrie Howard and Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams. It will be the first time public officials address the shooting since a 90-second briefing in front of MetroHealth at 2 a.m.

The news conference will be streamed live on the city’s Facebook page.

Skernivitz was hired in 1998 and worked in the department’s gang investigations unit and was sworn-in Wednesday to work with the FBI-led Northern Ohio Violent Crimes Task Force. The task force works with agents involved in Operation Legend, a task force set up to investigate violent crimes in several cities experiencing an increase in shootings and homicides.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. Thursday on West 65th Street and Storer Avenue.

Skernivitz was conducting an undercover investigation into the area and Scott Dingess, 50, was an informant working with Skernivitz, according to five police sources.

Three people fired several shots at the duo as they sat in Skernivitz’s unmarked police car. Skernivitz was shot once in the chest and the informant was hit several times, according to the sources.

Skernivitz drove a short distance and crashed. Cleveland police, federal and state agents scoured the area for hours. Authorities arrested three people in connection with the shooting on Friday. Their names and ages have not been released and formal charges have not yet been filed.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
