MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVY) - Governor Ivey held an update on the state’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic Wednesday morning.

Governor Ivey extended the state’s mask order for another 5 weeks ending on November 8.

The mask order which had been implemented in July has been credited by Ivey and State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris with limiting COVID-19 exposure, case growth, and hospitalization numbers in Alabama.

Ivey announced other updates to the state’s Safer-at-Home order. The governor says visitors will now be allowed to visit residents of long-term care facilities. And stressed that one caregiver and family member can enter a hospital with a COVID patient. She said there had been some confusion on that point in the Safer-at-Home order.

Harris said the mask mandate is what is the main cause of the falling numbers of cases and hospitalizations. He touted that no restrictions (except the ABC 11 PM closing for bars) have been needed in the state since April, mainly due to the mask mandate.

Dr. Harris also spoke about the state’s efforts to prepare for the distribution and allocation of a vaccine.

Governor Ivey’s Office released maps from Dr. Deborah Birx and The White House Coronavirus Task Force data team showing the progress of the fight against the pandemic in Alabama.
