Shortly before 2 p.m. today, Give More 24! had raised more than $1.6 million for Southwest Washington charities, surpassing its 2019 total.
More nonprofits than ever are participating in the midnight-to-midnight giving marathon supported by the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington. This is the seventh year of Give More 24!.
Today’s aim is to raise $2 million online for charities in Clark, Skamania and Cowlitz counties. To help reach that goal, more than $800,000 in matching funds are up for grabs as well as a dozen $1,500 prizes. So far, the Clark County Food Bank, Options360 Women’s Clinic, Share, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington and Camas Christian Academy have raised the most money.
People can search for their favorite charities on the website or search by cause or location. Donations can be as little as $5.
While donations during Give More 24! have always taken place online, there are traditionally events and activities that play into the festiveness of the day. Instead, due to COVID-19 precautions, many nonprofits are hosting virtual events to drum up support.
Thursday morning, Friends of Tree’s mascot Garry Oak and Jesse Batty, an urban forestry specialist with the city of Vancouver, led a tree tour through Esther Short Park, which was filmed live to Facebook. The nonprofit Friends of Trees, which plants trees in neighborhoods and natural areas, aims to raise $3,000 today.
Organizations including Evergreen Habitat for Humanity, YWCA Clark County and Meals on Wheels People are holding traditionally in-person fundraising events online today, coinciding them with Give More 24!.
Last year, in the last 20 minutes of the all-day, online fundraiser, Give More 24! passed its $1.6 million goal. Overall, 4,391 people donated to 169 different causes in 2019.
