COLUMBUS, Ohio — The number of initial and continued unemployment claims in Ohio each fell last week, continuing a mostly uninterrupted decline since the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
For the week of Aug. 30 through Sept. 5, 17,983 Ohioans filed initial unemployment claims, according to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services data released Thursday. That’s a 4% drop, or 736 fewer claims, than were filed the previous week, according to the department.
Last week, 328,515 continued unemployment claims were filed in the state, a drop of 15,984 from the previous week, according to state records. ODJFS has cited continued jobless claims as a sign of whether people are returning to work after coronavirus shutdowns earlier this year.
Both initial and continued jobless claims are only a fraction of what state officials processed in the spring, when the coronavirus crisis led Gov. Mike DeWine’s administration to shut down “non-essential” businesses (including bars and restaurants) and issue a “stay-at-home” order.
Since mid-March, a total of 1,682,061 unemployment claims were filed in Ohio – more than the number of claims filed during the previous four years combined, according to ODJFS.
Nationally, 884,000 people filed new unemployment claims, the same number who filed claims the previous week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
