FORT WAYNE Ind. (WPTA21) - Several Fort Wayne organizations handed out barbecue meals on the Southeast side of the city.

The groups served 200 free meals to people in need. For safety precautions, all volunteers handling food wore masks and gloves to keep everyone safe.

Several organizations including, Community Harvest Food Bank, Sweetwater Inc, and United Way, teamed up to make it happen. It was all put together by organizer Sandra Payton who tells ABC 21 throughout the past five months they've held these barbecues four times a month.

Payton said the barbecues help families in need in the Southeast side of Fort Wayne who need more resources, especially during this crisis. She said she's grateful for this opportunity to give out a lending hand.

"We are very aware of the need that's out here that often goes unmet because we are so far to the very end of the city, so to have this many people to come all the way out here out from the furthest point of the city it's because they need help"

Payton emphasizes the church wants to be part of the growing change on the Southeast side of town and she said she's grateful for this opportunity to give out a lending hand.
