MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Madison Police Dept. detectives are getting a better grasp on the events that led to multiple reports of gunfire Wednesday afternoon at two locations on Madison’s west side.
According to MPD’s incident report, the first bullets of the “gunshot spree” went off shortly before 12:30 p.m. at a BP gas station in the 600 block of S. Gammon Road, when one man fired a handgun at another. The targeted man drove away with the shooter chasing him.
Investigators say the pursuit continued down West Beltline Ave until they reached Whitney Way, where both vehicles got off the highway. Next, they turned onto Schroeder Rd. and kept going. MPD did not state how the chase ended, but by the time it was through, the vehicles had wound their way through Hathaway Dr., Woodington Way, Frisch Rd., and Raymond Rd. as well.
Members of the Madison Police Dept. reported finding shell casings at several locations along that route.
Hours after the chase, a 69-year-old man told investigators he found two bullets holes in the bumper of his van. He recalled taking the Whitney Way exit off the Beltline around the time of the chase when he heard what he thought at the time were fireworks. An MPD spokesman described him as an unintended target in the incident.
Police did not say if any injuries were reported. Its Violent Crime Unit is continuing to investigate.
