Connecticut added an estimated 73,300 nonagricultural jobs in June, the biggest monthly gain on record, the state Department of Labor reported Thursday.

Still, on a year-over-year basis, nonagricultural jobs were down by 172,700, an indication of the coronavirus pandemic’s impact.

“Connecticut saw the largest single month gain in jobs on record in June,” Andy Condon, director of the department’s Office of Research, said in a statement. “However, this gain has to be viewed from the perspective of the unprecedented job losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The largest job gains in June were seen in those industries most impacted by pandemic closures — leisure and hospitality, trade, and education and health care.”

May’s job gain of 25,800 was revised upward by 2,600 jobs.

In June, private sector employment recovered 68,200 jobs while the government “supersector,” which includes all federal, state and local employment, including public education and Native American casino employment on tribal land, grew by 5,100 jobs.

Though the federal government determined Connecticut’s official unemployment rate for June was 9.8%, the Office of Research estimates the rate to be in the range of 16% to 17% for the mid-June period, a decline over its estimate for May. The official rate continues to be underestimated, the office said, due to data-collection problems.

The national unemployment rate for June was 11.1%, down 2.2 points from May.

Joe Brennan, president of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, called the state’s June employment report “a positive step,” while noting the uncertain nature of the state’s economic recovery.

“Based on June’s preliminary numbers, we’ve now recovered 35% of the 291,300 jobs lost in March and April because of COVID-19 business shutdowns and restrictions,” he said. “Connecticut is a leader in its response to the coronavirus and one of the major reasons is that most residents are following the state’s guidelines for wearing masks, social distancing, and hygiene practices.”

Brennan noted that Connecticut employment has declined by 183,600 jobs through the first six months of the year.

Donald Klepper-Smith, chief economist and director of research for DataCore Partners, a consulting group, said the June job numbers exceeded his expectations but repeated his caution that “monthly snapshots” can be misleading. He said the state economy’s primary trend continues to be downward.

The state’s data show all six of Connecticut’s labor market areas experienced job gains in June. The Norwich-New London-Westerly area added an estimated 11,600 jobs, a 12% increase over May.
