TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The 25th-ranked Florida State Women’s Basketball team (4-2) battles the Illinois Fighting Illini (3-3) on the road at State Farm Center in what is the 14th B1G/ACC Challenge on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on Big Ten+.

FSU owns a strong 11-2 record in the annual conference challenge, the best record among current ACC schools. The Seminoles’ record is the best among ACC teams and only Maryland (7-0 in the ACC, 5-1 in the Big Ten, 12-1 overall) has a better overall record among competing schools in both conferences.

Florida State has won eight consecutive B1G/ACC Challenge games, the longest active win streak of any current ACC or Big Ten school. The Seminoles have won every game played in the challenge since 2012 when it defeated Iowa 83-69. There was no challenge in 2020 due to COVID-19. In that time span, the Seminoles own challenge wins over Michigan State twice, Purdue, Rutgers, Minnesota, Iowa and Penn State.

The ACC leads the B1G/ACC Challenge overall with a 9-1-3 record. However, the Big Ten won the last challenge played in 2019, earning a 9-5 win over the ACC to snap a seven-year losing skid.

Despite finishing 0-2 at the St. Pete Showcase, a couple of Seminoles heated up and hope to continue their strong play in Thursday’s game vs. Illinois. Senior guard and returning All-American Morgan Jones averaged 13.0 points, shot 50 percent (8-of-16), grabbed 8.5 rebounds and went 10-of-12 from the free throw line vs. BYU and Purdue.

In Jones’ five-game scoring streak of being in double figures, she is averaging 16.4 points and shooting 60.8 percent (28-of-46) during that span. She continues to attack the rim and create contact this season. The Jonesboro, Ga., native is tied with Jewel Spear of Wake Forest for the most free throw attempts in the ACC with 40.

Jones also leads a shot-blocking unit that ranks sixth nationally with 7.0 blocked shots per game.

Junior guard Sammie Puisis found her stroke from the outside by shooting 5-of-10 from 3-point range and averaging 10.5 points in St. Pete.

Florida State is getting back its rebounding edge that has become a staple of the program in recent seasons. In six games this season, the Seminoles have out-rebounded their opponents in each game, and own a +10.3 rebounding margin. FSU is one of 10 ACC teams that own a double-digit edge in rebounding margin.

Florida State’s field goal percentage defense of 31.9 percent is another high-ranking mark, sitting 15th nationally and fifth in the ACC. Only one opponent in Purdue (40.3 percent) has snuck above the 40 percent threshold vs. the Seminoles this season.

Following Thursday’s matchup, the Seminoles return home on Sunday, Dec. 5, to host Charleston Southern in what will be its InternatioNOLES Game at 2 p.m.
