Dear Editor,
As president, and on behalf of the Kingston Library Board of Trustees, please be reminded that Tuesday, September 21, the Kingston Library tax levy vote and election of three library board members will be held at the library, 55 Franklin St., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
During the past 15 months, the community has experienced hardships associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. We had to make adjustments in our lives until city/county offices, schools, and businesses reopened, and, yes, we waited for our Kingston Library to open its doors to the public. Our library was closed from March 13 through June 8, 2020, and the public gradually was welcomed back the end of July last year. Full in-person services resumed Sept. 28, 2020.
During that time, our staff, under the leadership of Library Director Margie Menard, sought innovative, out-of-the-box ways to continue to engage library users. A myriad of activities, including virtual storytelling, take-home craft kits for the kids and book bingo for adults were available to entice library patrons.
Our library resources were shifted to increase digital resources to accommodate the library users not being able to visit in-person due to the pandemic. E-books (13,470), e-audio books (4,941), digital magazine titles (100), video downloads (3,198) and online courses and continuing education were well-received. During that time, we also subscribed to Hoopla streaming media, Kanopy streaming video, and Mango language learning as well as online tutoring services. One could depend on the library being there during these unusual, difficult times, serving the needs of the community.
I encourage you to support the Kingston Library by voting Tuesday, September 21. The library budget presented for 2022 is $976,024, an increase of $59,569 from the previous year. Based on a $300,000 home value, this breaks down to approximately $130/household annually.
Complete budget information and trustee candidate statements can be found at https://www.kingstonlibrary.org/library-election-2021/.
If you are unable to vote in person, absentee ballots are available and must be submitted by 5 p.m. the day of the election to be counted. Support the Kingston Library. Thank you.
