Deausy
Dr. Sandra Deausy, health officer of the La Porte County Health Department, stated in a press release May 12 that she was disappointed to learn of the Indiana Legislature’s decision to override Gov. Eric Holcomb’s veto of Senate Enrolled Act No. 005. The override voided Deausy’s health order of April 30 requiring facial coverings in indoor public spaces and requiring restaurants and bars to seat patrons at least 6 feet apart.
Deausy said she believes this is a dangerous move that will prevent local health departments from responding to health emergencies. She said local health officers and their departments must often make immediate, urgent and complex decisions to protect public health, and this legislative action ultimately limits the ability of the health officers to make timely decisions during a public health emergency such as the coronavirus pandemic.
To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, it is still advised and highly encouraged to wear a mask in public, indoor spaces. The following protective measures should also be taken:
- Wash hands frequently during the day for 20 seconds with soap and water. If this is not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Maintain a minimum 6-foot distance between yourself and individuals outside of your household.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Stay home and isolate yourself from other members if your household if you are sick.
- Avoid being around sick people.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces often.
- Sneeze and cough into the inside of your elbow or a tissue.
