Note: The NFL Draft begins April 29 and the Green Bay Packers have the 29th pick in the first round. Between now and then, I’ll examine 29 players — one per day — the Packers could select with that pick.
Today, we look at Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi.
SAMUEL COSMI, OL, TEXAS
THE SKINNY
Cosmi arrived at Texas weighing just 260 pounds and redshirted the 2017 season. He started 13 games at right tackle in 2018 and was named a Freshman All-American.
Cosmi moved to left tackle in 2019 and earned second-team all-Big 12 honors. Cosmi started eight games at left tackle in 2020, then opted out the final month of the season.
MEASURABLES
Height: 6-5 7/8”
Weight: 314
Bench press: 36 reps of 225
40-yard dash: 4.85
Arms: 33”
Hands: N/A
Broad jump: 9-9”
Vertical jump: 30”
SCOUTING REPORT
Cosmi is a high-level athlete who can still add 10-15 pounds to his frame without losing any athleticism.
As a run blocker, Cosmi is quick to the second level and moves around the field like a big tight end. He lacks play strength, though, and doesn’t move people in the run game the way coaches would like.
In pass pro, Cosmi’s length is a huge advantage. He’ll need to improve several technical flaws, though, to handle the diverse array of rushers he’ll see at the next level.
Cosmi figures to begin his career at right tackle. If he can gain muscle mass, though, and correct flaws in his lower half, he could slide to left tackle down the road.
PACKERS’ PREDICAMENT
The Packers lost Corey Linsley, arguably the best center in football, in free agency. Left tackle David Bakhtiari, who tore his ACL before Week 17 last year, might also miss the start of the 2021 campaign.
So Green Bay needs reinforcements up front.
The flexibility of Green Bay’s linemen allows it to draft for talent, not for need.
Elgton Jenkins can play virtually any position up front and could wind up replacing Linsley at center. Lucas Patrick can play guard or center, while Billy Turner can play tackle or guard.
The Packers haven't used a first-round pick on the offensive line since they took Derek Sherrod in 2011. Cosmi could change that, though, and help the Packers begin answering some of their offensive line questions.
THEY SAID IT
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay on Cosmi: “I don’t think he had the season that everyone is kind of projecting on mock drafts and rankings, that has led him to believe he’s going to be a first-round pick. Now, he may have gotten a second-round grade from the advisory committee and the Cosmi family may have said ‘that’s good enough for us, we’re ready to go.’ The situation there with the coaching change and everything else, but he’s a player that really could have benefited from another year of school.”
Former NFL coach Jim Mora Jr.: “You're looking at a 6-foot-7, 310-pounder who can get to 330 easily. He's got tremendous length and that's what you want at that offensive tackle position.
"Often times you'll see a guy who is a great pass protector that maybe doesn't play with the same violence in the run game that Sam does. The run game stuff is secondary to his ability to pass protect.”
Cosmi said: “My parents came to America with nothing but the shirts on their backs. When you find yourself in a new country with nothing to your name, all you can really count on is your work ethic. That’s something I learned from my parents. I saw how much they had to work and strive just to give us a better life. I wouldn’t be where I am right now if it wasn’t for them. It speaks volumes of their dedication and hard work.
“That’s what I’ve taken from their story. Their drive for their kids to have a better life is the biggest life lesson I could have ever asked for.”
ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper on Cosmi: "He’s one of those polarizing guys. If you see him in certain games, you like his skills as a left tackle, played right tackle as well. And others where he’s had trouble in those 1-on-1 situations. He’s going to be one of those guys teams may roll the dice for earlier … it will be a lot of differences of opinion but somebody is going to take him.”
