MUSKEGON, MI – Dozens of Muskegon businesses are banding together to give away meals and gifts to local mothers for Mother’s Day.

The pay-it-forward initiative started when LaKisha Harris, the owner of Soul Filled Eatery, decided to she wanted to give away a meal to three area moms in honor of the holiday. She posted on Facebook after a community member donated to help fund the meals, and the effort snowballed.

Within a week, more than three dozen local businesses got on board and contributed bottles of wine, flowers, a free haircut, makeovers, photoshoots and more. Financial donations have come in from people around the country.

“This initiative has taken on legs by itself,” Harris said. “There are people sending money from Mississippi, Tennessee, Fort Lauderdale, Florida and even as far away as Brazil to make a Mother’s Day amazing for Muskegon County.”

Soul Filled Eatery will now be giving away 50 meals paired with gifts from area businesses. Any additional donated funds will be distributed to the mothers as gift cards.

Harris said the collaboration between the businesses shows Muskegon is becoming more “forward thinking” and “community-driven.”

“I see it taking us from being divided by location and making us one,” she said.

Mothers entered into a drawing will be eligible for the free meals and gifts. Anyone can submit a name after making a purchase with no minimum cost from Soul Filled Eatery, 3232 Glade St.

A makeover with hair, makeup, clothing and jewelry will be given away to mothers nominated with a one paragraph written submission explaining why they should win.

“Mothers are valued and treasured in every aspect, and all of us feel a need to take care of our mother,” Harris said.

Harris will continue to accept donations until Friday, April 30. The drawing for the meals and the makeover will be held on Soul Filled Eatery’s Facebook page on Saturday, May 1.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9.
