The UConn women’s basketball team resumed full practices on Thursday, Dec. 3, five days earlier than initially scheduled, the program announced Monday.

The decision to return to the practice court was made after the players continued to test negative for COVID-19 last week. Tier 1 individuals — including players, coaches, trainers and practice players — are tested three times a week per NCAA recommendations.

The Huskies were five days out from their season opener when a Tier 1 individual tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 23, leading to what was initially set to be a 14-day shutdown that wiped out their first three games of their season and postponed the fourth. The team resumed small group workouts on Nov. 28 in pods of three or four after players continued to test negative that week.

The 10-day quarantine in all coincides with recently updated CDC guidance saying people can complete a reduced quarantine of 10 days without testing for the virus, or seven days with a negative test. The men’s program would potentially be able to play Dec. 17 at Providence if it can fulfill the same 10-day quarantine without any issues.

The UConn women are set to open their season Saturday against UMass Lowell at Gampel Pavilion.
