The day after Gov. Charlie Baker hinted more coronavirus restrictions would come as hospital capacity is pushed the brink, the state’s economic development chief and the health czar will join the Republican governor for an update, sources say.

Watch the governor’s comments live at 1 p.m.:

Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders and Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Mike Kennealy will join Baker for the 1 p.m. address at the State House, officials said. Sources close to the administration say an announcement related to rollbacks of the state’s reopening is expected.

Last Monday, Baker rolled back the state’s reopening to Phase 3, Step 1, shuttering performance venues and certain “high-contact indoor recreational businesses” including roller rinks, trampoline parks, laser tag venues, fitting rooms and escape rooms.

Other businesses — including retail stores, gyms, offices, churches, libraries, movie theaters, arcades, golf facilities and museums — cut capacity to 40%, down from 50% of their maximum.

But the move was seen as not strict enough by a consortium of area mayors who took coronavirus restrictions into their own hands, rolling back a step farther to close gyms, fitness centers, bowling alleys, arcades, museums, movie theaters, aquariums and indoor event spaces in cities including  Boston, Somerville, Newton, Arlington, Lynn and Winthrop.

Coronavirus cases have been surging in the Bay State since the Thanksgiving holiday. Despite desperate please from officials, many chose not stay home for the holiday and instead appear to have traveled, public health data reveal.

Ten days before the November holiday, Massachusetts was averaging 2,501 new daily cases. By 10 days after, the seven-day average had reached 4,668 — a 96% increase, Baker said.

Case growth has “slowed,” Baker said on Monday, but not enough to assuage concerns of “another significant surge” following the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
