KILLEEN, TX — With the pandemic still in full swing and unemployment still high, enjoying the holidays with a Christmas meal is a lot harder for some this year.

There’s nothing like a warm, home-cooked meal during the holidays. However, for Killeen residents in the downtown area, getting to the grocery store to make dinner can be a challenge.

“They have to go farther to get their groceries and get things done. They want things closer, and because you don’t spend as much gas, you don’t spend so much time away from home,” said Killeen resident Larry Robertson.

Not mention, many are social distancing and avoiding large crowds to prevent spread of the coronavirus. That is why the Innovation Black Chamber of Commerce is using technology to bring more than a dozen families a turkey and other ingredients to help out.

“We did it during the Thanksgiving, and now we’re doing it again, pushing information through text messaging to reach to people,” said Innovation Black Chamber of Commerce founder, Ronnie Russell.

Russell says they’re using a texting software to send alerts to locals telling them about their service. Afterwards, all residents have to do is text back HOLIDAY, then they can come by and pick up a thawed turkey, cranberry sauce, green beans and more.

“To give them access to nutrition in this food desert, especially in this area, we have to begin to provide access to those things,” said Russell.

Russell says the free service has helped around 50 people, including those who are military personnel and had to stay home alone during the holidays, families who couldn’t afford a meal and more.

He says in return, all he asks is for them to help someone else.

“Make someone a plate. Whether you’re feeding someone that’s under the bridge on the exit or you’re coming down to the 4041 area or you’re providing access or nutrition for someone who didn’t have the ability to cook a meal, cook it for them and pay it forward,” said Russell.

Community coming together to make sure everyone feels special on Christmas Day.
