Much has changed since then for Caroline Schlay-Huber; she no longer has to deal with painful finger pricks to check her blood sugar.
"I can now check my blood sugar on my phone, which I really like, and my parents can see that as well," she said.
Meanwhile, former JDRF youth ambassador Louis Lambert has also grown up a bit and is dealing the best he can with coronavirus.
"I also have to be super cautious about wearing my mask, and distancing, because we don't know how COVID would affect my body, and we don't want to find out," Louis said. "Outside of school ... I especially can't see my diabetic friends as much ... seeing them makes me think we are in this together, and we can do this."
Many of the advances in the fight against Type 1 diabetes have been championed by the JDRF organization.
"JDRF is so crucial and fundamental to people with diabetes and they just do so much and I think they deserve anything they can get to keep doing the amazing work that they do," Egert said about the organization.
Egert's son, Dakota, was diagnosed in 2014 and is now a sophomore, playing high school football for Minnetonka.
The annual JDRF One Walk at Mall of America is in question early next year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many other fundraisers have gone virtual.
Even though the JDRF organization is working with 50 percent less staff than when the pandemic hit in March, they want newly-diagnosed individuals and their families not to feel that they have to begin their diabetes journey alone.
