TAMPA, Fla. - Tradition.
Everyone has them, especially during the holidays.
Like the five Tampa families who have received meals and hugs for Thanksgiving.
The tradition started when Robert Weiner was an assistant coach at Jesuit and continued when he became the head coach at Plant High. Now that he’s at the University of Toledo in Ohio, surely the tradition ends, right? Wrong.
“It’s great to carry on his legacy now that he’s gone,” former Plant player Elijah Sejour said.
Tradition goes on even when the person who started it is more than a thousand miles away. Weiner is in the midst of his first college football season as the Rockets quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. But he made sure his Tampa families were taken care of.
“The real important thing that we can never lose touch of is that the most important things in our world are people,” Weiner said.
That’s always been the way Weiner’s coached, not with X’s and O’s, but with people skills. And while his football mind is in Toledo, his heart is in Tampa. And that’s what this holiday tradition has always been about for him - filling people’s hearts with love and hope.
“Despite the fact that we’ve had an amazingly difficult 2020, with so many things going on that has challenged our country and challenged our people in our country, there are still wonderful things going on,” Weiner said.
“It really shows you who Coach Weiner is,” former Plant player Bryson Martin said. “He cares a lot about the community and it’s not just all about football.”
That’s why cars filled with food and presents were driven all over Tampa and delivered to the families who depend on it this time of year.
With each door that opened, as Coach Weiner’s friends and former players delivered the feast, the family’s faces said it all.
“You can tell they’re very thankful,” Martin said. “They’re excited to get the food, always a smile on their face.”
And soon, a belly full of the food. Every family got a turkey. They got a ham. They got all the trimmings for a Thanksgiving meal. And they got a prayer.
“Just know that during this Thanksgiving season that there are some people out there that might not have the reason to feel like they have to give thanks or to have a smile on their face,” Weiner said. “And we can do something small to reach out to somebody, perhaps that will make the whole world a better place.”
