I believe in the good of all people in the world.
I believe that inherent in all of us is a desire to be a good person and to help and love those around us. Life circumstances may harden and taint what we see outwardly in a person. But I believe that at our very core, we all want to make a difference.
It’s because of this that the idea of GivingTuesday intrigues me. If you’re on social media, you’ve certainly noticed GivingTuesday requests from nonprofit organizations needing donations. I’ve seen more and more of them over the years, but didn’t know much about actual GivingTuesday — a relatively new designation for the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Once I looked a little deeper into the intention behind GivingTuesday, I knew it provided the perfect timing to let a few thousand of my friends — that’s you — in on ways this one day of the year can inspire the difference maker in each and every one of us.
It’s important you understand that GivingTuesday is not solely focused on giving money to a cause. It’s about literally giving whatever you can offer: your time to a neighbor who needs help, a smile to the cashier at the gas station, your professional expertise during tax season, whatever monetary donation you can make … no amount is too small.
Inside today’s paper you will find our first annual GivingTuesday “Together We Give” publication, 32 pages detailing the need in Montcalm and Ionia counties, the amazing work of 17 area non profit organizations, the tax benefits of giving, and a lot of ideas for ways that you can make a difference. These are just a few of the many organizations that help meet the incredible need in our communities. According to a Google search, we have 944 nonprofit organizations in Montcalm and Ionia counties. Their histories and reason for being are diverse, but each and every one of them succeeds because of the incredible people who work, volunteer and donate to make them possible.
My personal hope is that you spend a little time with “Together We Give” and that it inspires and motivates you to join me in finding new ways that you can touch someone else’s life. I can’t wait to see what a difference we can all make.
