Going completely virtual in the time of the novel coronavirus pandemic proved a boon to the Big Give SA, an annual 24-hour fundraising extravaganza that helps hundreds of area nonprofits.
The online drive, which was held Thursday and mainly appeals to smaller-dollar donors, raised more than $4.9 million. That’s about $200,000 above what the fund drive typically has generated in years not marred by a pandemic, said its organizer.
The money flowed from more than 21,000 donors to 472 organizations, which focus on everything from the arts to veterans.

“I’m touched by the how our community rallied around the Big Give this year and donated during this campaign, especially during this time of hardship for many,” said Scott McAninch, CEO of the Nonprofit Council, which runs the event.
“This allowed all of us to focus on something positive and realize that supporting our nonprofits is important because of the help and healing they provide so many right here in San Antonio and South Texas,” he said.
Normally, the online drive is held in March and features lively in-person events and celebrations at various nonprofits across the region to boost interest among potential donors.
Last spring, in response to the virus, the 24-hour drive morphed into a virtual, two-month emergency relief fund drive that raised just under $1 million from more than 3,400 donors.

The drive was focused on helping charities and other groups address the immediate needs of the community brought about by the pandemic.
This year’s funds will go toward the broad range of work done by groups that help make San Antonio and the surrounding area a “better place to live, work and play.”
“And we’re already starting to prepare for next year’s Big Give coming Sept. 23,” McAninch said.
