COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus City Council once again on Tuesday evening voted to continue a matter that has come before it a few times recently, the request by St. Peter’s Lutheran Church to rezone a piece of the property it owns in the area of Fourth and Chestnut Streets from residential: established, to public. The church wants to put a parking lot there to accommodate vehicles arriving to visit the church’s counseling center and athletic facility.
The vote was tied. Several council members had to recuse themselves due to membership in the church.
The two issues driving the ongoing stalemate are a 2018 report on soil vapor that shows old utility lines from a dry-cleaning business bring contaminants into one side of the property, and intentions stated in the Envision Columbus plan for housing to be developed in that area.
The matter will again be on next months’ agenda.
