The Cleveland Browns have signed running back Kareem Hunt to a two-year extension.
Terms were not disclosed but the extension is worth $13.25 million, including $8.5 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN. In March, Hunt signed a second-round tender to stay in Cleveland. He now will be under contract with the Browns for the next three seasons.
In an Instagram post, Hunt said he was "honored to sign this extension with the Cleveland Browns, and play next to my Dawg Brothers for years to come."
Playing behind starter Nick Chubb, Hunt rushed for 179 yards, caught 37 passes and scored three touchdowns last season after serving an eight-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy after video from February 2018 surfaced of him kicking a woman in downtown Cleveland. New general manager Andrew Berry's predecessor, John Dorsey, signed him to the Browns last February after he had been released by the Kansas City Chiefs.
This offseason, Hunt was pulled over on Jan. 21 and police found a small amount of marijuana in a backpack in the back seat of the car he was driving. Hunt was cited only for speeding. And afterward, Berry indicated Hunt would remain in Cleveland's plans, saying that the team was "looking forward to him meshing with our culture going forward."
"Kareem Hunt is a core component of our offense. He has been a great teammate, outstanding worker, and steadfast in his desire to have success in his hometown for the long term," Berry said in a statement. "Personal growth is often times non-linear but Kareem has remained committed to becoming the best version of himself and we are proud of the redemptive strides he has taken. He understands the opportunity he has in front of him -- provided he maintains his current personal trajectory -- and we look forward to the contributions he will continue to make to our team."
