The Humana Foundation will give Simmons College of Kentucky $1.3 million for computers and WiFi for students as well as information technology revitalization.
In a statement, Simmons said its goal of having online courses and degrees for students became a "necessity" during the coronavirus pandemic but that many of it's students "are on the downside of the 'digital divide,' and lack access to computers and the Internet."
The donation from the Humana Foundation will upgrade Simmons' IT infrastructure and supply computers and WiFi for students.
"We are grateful for these funds in support of our college to build a quality online distance learning program, so our students can continue their education during this time of uncertainty,” Dr. Kevin Cosby, the president of Simmons, said in a statement. “This funding will be used to provide a stable and academically rigorous learning environment that meets universal accreditation standards.”

“We are proud to help put Simmons College on a path that helps assure its continued service to the Louisville community and beyond,” Walter D. Woods, CEO of The Humana Foundation, said in a statement. “Education is key to attaining sustained employment and health equity, and, right now, online education is crucial to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep the Louisville community safe.”
Simmons College of Kentucky, a historically Black college in Louisville, has relied on remote learning this fall, along with many other colleges and universities that have implemented hybrid class models during the pandemic.
In August, Humana announced it would donate $150 million to the Humana Foundation, its philanthropic sister.
